Dwelling

Dwelling was on display at the Las Cruces Museum of Art, in Las Cruces, New Mexico from July 6th to August 25th 2007. The exhibit consisted of etchings, paintings, sculptures and two installations designed specifically for the space. I am interested in both meanings of the word dwelling: a home to live in and to linger in memory. This includes individual memory, but also familial, cultural, and genetic knowledge. Within each of us reside bits of many previous lives. The idea of everything being connected isn’t a simplistic notion; life on our planet is ecologically and biologically interwoven.

Several of the works in the exhibition originated from other projects and previous exhibits. As I completed the newest works for Dwelling, I began to notice echoes of older works; since memory is a significant theme of the show, I felt compelled to incorporate these "seed" pieces into the exhibit. The oldest work in the show is a drawing from 2001; Plumbing (The Depth of Intuition) is clearly a precursor to the Salt Labyrinth...

Likewise, the sacrum-tangle in Conversion (Seed Dreams), from 2004, precedes the intricate rib-roots of the installation Sheltering Eve.
